Over the years, I have heard many Christians speak of a “life verse” — a single Bible passage that guides their direction or carries a specific promise they regularly claim. As a Christian, I often felt inadequate because I had no such verse. Instead, I experienced the entire Bible as a love letter from God, teaching me how to live successfully. Still, I asked God to show me a specific verse to live by, if such a verse existed for me.
One day I came across this passage in the Psalms:
“For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.”
Psalm 75:6 (KJV)
The verse struck me as odd. I had never noticed the word “promotion” anywhere else in scripture — other translations often render it as “lifting up.” But a second oddity caught my attention. As a boy, I spent plenty of time navigating the woods with a compass, and every compass I ever held had four directions with a needle that always pointed north. Yet this verse names east, west, and south — and pointedly omits north. I wanted to know why.
Then I discovered Leviticus 1:11:
“…and he shall kill it on the north side of the altar before the Lord, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall throw its blood against the sides of the altar.”
Leviticus 1:11 (ESV)
When an Old Testament priest offered a sacrifice for the sins of the people, he always killed it on the north side of the altar. Suddenly the picture came into focus.
God’s Path to Promotion
God’s ways often run 180 degrees opposite our own. Countless books teach climbing the corporate ladder by stepping on coworkers, leveraging relationships, or maneuvering for personal advantage. A funny movie made many years ago was called How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The key character uses manipulation and even blackmail to become the head person in the company over a short period of time.
But God charts a different course for us. He calls us to live sacrificially for others as the path to genuine promotion.
Here lies my interpretation of Psalm 75:6 for my own life: God calls me to sacrifice personal ambition and self-seeking so that I can help others succeed.
In return, He rewards that posture with new opportunities, new responsibilities, and fresh blessings — precisely because I committed myself to making others successful.
How This Shaped My Career
This principle has shaped my career in remarkable ways. Early in my IT career, I focused on making my boss look successful. I worked hard so that he received recognition for his team’s contributions. He noticed, our team thrived, and when a new opportunity arose, he recommended me for the role — even though it meant losing me from his team. I carried the same approach to my next manager, working hard to help him succeed. Later, when IBM acquired my employer, I returned to my original boss, and the pattern repeated: I worked to make him successful, and once again he championed my advancement. This cycle has defined my IT career.
Over the years, I have served the Defense Department and every branch of the U.S. military, helping them detect and understand threats to their infrastructure. I have supported large telecom organizations across the United States and Canada, helping them manage their networks more effectively and deliver greater uptime to their customers. With every client, I listened to their frustrations and worked to remove the obstacles draining their time and energy.
At one Managed Service Provider, I applied AI to automate processes that previously consumed ninety minutes — reducing them to three seconds. Rather than cutting 42 positions, the company launched an entirely new line of business and grew without adding headcount.
What This Means for You
When a new client engages Two Swords Digital Solutions, my goal does not center on extracting maximum revenue. My goal centers on making that client more successful — eliminating tedious manual work and delivering new customers to their business. I count myself successful only when you see the results you envisioned for your company. Working for your success defines my calling.
When you partner with Two Swords Digital Solutions, you can count on me to work both day and night to:
- Optimize your digital footprint
- Bring you new customers
- Evaluate and strengthen your marketing plans
- Eliminate the repetitive manual processes that drain your time as a seller of products or services
My aim is to make you look exceptional to your clients, customers, or patients. I conduct quarterly audits to measure our progress, and several of our plans include regular one-on-one meetings where you give feedback or surface new problems. I want to know whether I can help you solve that problem or remove another manual burden from your operation.
Working for your success leads naturally to the success of Two Swords Digital Solutions — and to my own.
For my team and I, this principle is more than a slogan.
It is our calling.
